I met Chad a few years ago thanks to a mutual friend who connected us - she knew we were both big orca nerds so of course our friendship grew from that. Chad was even able to go to Norway with me on a trip I led to study orcas above the arctic circle! And when he first told me about this girl Rachel, I knew she was pretty special. These two compliment one another so well - they’re travel lovers, adventure seekers, and the best parents to little Brecken. I was completely honored when they asked me if I’d be their wedding photographer. And I love that Chad & Rachel chose Prairie Berry for their perfect destination wedding here in the hills.

It’s not really a secret that I love Prairie Berry Winery. (I’m even a wine club member - ha!) So I’m always pretty excited when we get to photograph a wedding here. The venue is gorgeous, the wine is superb, and the Black Hills views are the perfect backdrop for our couples. April weather can be unpredictable and we had a little bit of wind and snow to start the day, but we also lucked out with gorgeous sunshine after the ceremony for bridal portraits. We found a spot with views of the snow-covered hills and tested Rachel’s twirling abilities. She was a college athlete so it was an easy task ;)

For the finale, these two hired DJ Marek to rock their reception, which means the dance floor was packed all night long. Chad & Rachel surprised their guests with electric sparklers for their first dance (guest reactions were priceless and everyone was blown away). And after a little wine, Miner Brewing beer, cookie bar, and air guitar, we ended the night with a sparkler send-off. It was the best day surrounded by some of Rachel & Chad’s closest friends & family members and top-notch vendors. Congrats to the new Mr. & Mrs. VanderPoel! We loved celebrating with you!
